Infrared Sauna Health Benefits

Detoxification

Sweat out the toxins. Sweating is one of the body’s safest and most natural ways to heal and maintain good health by helping to eliminate toxic heavy metals, drug residues, and hormone disruptors. With the deepest penetration, Sunlighten saunas’ infrared helps increase blood flow and perspiration.

Weight Loss

Increase metabolism and burn fat. Increasing core body heat increases calorie burn, similar to exercise. Infrared saunas also help eliminate toxins that cause fat storage.

Heart Health

Improve heart health. Infrared therapy can help your heart work better by exercising the heart, temporarily reducing blood pressure, and improving circulation.

Anti-Aging

Purify and rejuvenate your skin. Harness a scientifically proven “fountain of youth” and revitalize your skin’s appearance. Far infrared waves increase circulation and detoxify the skin, helping regenerate and cleanse cells.

Immunity

Heating the body from inside can improve the function of the immune system just like a fever can. Therefore, regular Sunlighten sauna use can help reduce the incidences of cold and flu, or help you recover faster from illness.

Muscle Recovery

Repair muscles faster. Many professional athletes use Sunlighten saunas to recover from their training and injuries. Infrared helps deliver more oxygen to cells for faster repair and pain relief.

Preparing for Your First Sauna Session:

  1. Hydrate Well: Drink plenty of water before your session to stay hydrated and help your body adjust to the heat.

  2. Wear the Right Attire: Most saunas are enjoyed best in minimal clothing—usually a swimsuit or a towel. We offer you a robe and towels, but please be courteous and keep undergarments on. Make sure to bring a change of clothes.

  3. Personal Items: Bring a book or Kindle to read while in the sauna. We suggest leaving your phone out to avoid it overheating!

  4. Health Considerations: Consult with a healthcare provider if you have any medical conditions or concerns. Saunas may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with cardiovascular issues or if you are pregnant.

  5. Plan for Relaxation: Allow yourself time to unwind and relax. Saunas can be a soothing experience, so aim to arrive with a calm mindset and enjoy the benefits of heat therapy.

Summary: Heat Therapy Shows Promise for Depression Relief

A recent study led by Dr. Charles Raison from the University of Wisconsin-Madison has found that raising body temperature can significantly alleviate symptoms of major depression. Using a whole-body hyperthermia device, researchers increased the body temperature of participants to about 101.3°F (38.5°C), equivalent to a mild fever. Results showed notable improvements in depression symptoms lasting up to six weeks after just one treatment.

In the study, 60% of participants experienced a positive response, and 40% achieved remission at least once following treatment. The method involved heating participants using infrared lights and coils, and it was compared to a sham procedure to ensure the effects were not solely due to placebo.

Dr. Raison believes that the heat stimulates serotonin-producing cells in the brain, which may enhance mood regulation. This innovative approach offers a potential alternative to traditional antidepressants and may pave the way for faster-acting depression treatments.

While the initial results are promising, further research with larger sample sizes is needed to refine the treatment parameters and confirm its effectiveness. The study was funded by various organizations including the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation and was presented at the 2016 Society of Biological Psychiatry Meeting.

PHOTOBIOMODULATION

Infrared saunas mimic the same infrared wavelengths created by the sun but leave out the harmful, skin-damaging ultraviolet waves. When we enjoy the rejuvenating effects of the sun’s warmth on our skin, we are actually enjoying photons delivered at the speed of light from the sun. A photon is a minute energy packet of electromagnetic radiation generated from the Sun’s core. All living things have evolved to utilize photons, especially those in the infrared range, to stimulate growth, energize the body, and regulate many cellular processes.

Healing Properties of Infrared Photons:

  • Pain Relief: Infrared therapy is effective in reducing pain and inflammation. It penetrates deep into tissues, improving blood flow and reducing oxidative stress.

  • Improved Circulation: Infrared light increases the production of nitric oxide, which helps relax blood vessels, improve circulation, and deliver more oxygen and nutrients to injured tissues.

  • Detoxification: Infrared saunas can help detoxify the body by promoting sweating, which helps eliminate toxins.

  • Immune System Boost: Infrared therapy can enhance the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells and improving overall cellular function.

  • Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Infrared light reduces inflammation, which is beneficial for conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and muscle strains.

These benefits make infrared therapy a valuable tool for promoting healing and overall well-being.

Mitochondria Activation: Red light and near-infrared wavelengths energize the mitochondria, which are the power plants of virtually every human cell (as well as animal, plant, and fungi cells). Well-functioning mitochondria create the energy needed to drive cellular function and all of our biological processes.

Photobiomodulation: Light therapies, red light LEDs, low level lasers, and infrared saunas use light, all can be used to stimulate living things into healing themselves. These different wavelengths of light produce photons with proven healing, anti-aging, wound healing, immune-boosting, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Modern Life and Infrared Deprivation: In the last 30 years humankind has produced the first generation cut-off from or at least we are often starved of the regulation red and infrared light, as many of us live and work all day under artificial blue lighting, looking into blue-light devices for hours on end. This deprivation of the natural balanced wavelength of light, leaves us much more vulnerable to dysregulation imbalance and disease.

Longevity and Health: Mitochondria are like cell engines, providing energy (ATP) for every part of our body. With age, these cellular engines can wear down, causing decreased ATP, increased oxidative stress, and impaired cellular energy metabolism. Infrared light helps by boosting mitochondria with energy, improving function, and creating more “engines” when necessary. This can counteract mitochondrial dysfunction, keeping cells healthy and helping slow aging. It also lowers low-grade inflammation, which stealthily impacts health and accelerates the aging process.

Ideally sitting under a tree in the sun, absorbing the rich red and infrared light, not absorbed by green plants reflected to us, to keep us healthy. If your lifestyle doesn’t allow this, consider a course of infrared sauna sessions for your health and longevity.
